Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max emerged as the best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2024, according to a report from Counterpoint Research.
During this period, Apple and Samsung dominated the list of the top 10 best-selling smartphones, with each company securing five spots. No other brands made it onto the list.
This marked the first quarter in which all of the top 10 smartphones were 5G-capable, highlighting the growing adoption of this technology.
Three variants of the iPhone 15 series claimed the top three positions, with the iPhone 15 Plus ranking eighth. Additionally, the iPhone 14 secured fourth place, making it another strong performer for Apple in the rankings.
Samsung's top performer in the first quarter of 2024 was the Galaxy S24 Ultra, ranking as the fifth best-selling smartphone. The base Galaxy S24 model placed ninth.
Three additional Samsung models—the Galaxy A15 5G, Galaxy A54, and Galaxy A34—secured sixth, seventh, and tenth positions, respectively.
According to Counterpoint Research, "Consumers are holding onto their smartphones for longer periods as upgrades offer limited feature differentiation." As a result, many opt for high-end smartphones to ensure their devices remain technologically relevant for longer.
Global smartphone revenue reached a record high in the first quarter of 2024, driven by strong sales from Apple and increased demand in key regions, according to a separate study by Counterpoint. Revenue in the industry grew 7% year-over-year, marking the highest-ever revenue for a March quarter. Although no exact figures were provided, analysts estimate Apple’s iPhone sales at around $69.7 billion for Q1.
The trend toward premium smartphones was clear, with seven of the top 10 best-sellers priced at $600 or more. Counterpoint noted, "We expect the top 10 best-selling smartphones to capture an even larger share of total sales as manufacturers focus on leaner portfolios with premium features, including Generative AI."
The iPhone 15 Pro Max achieved the top spot in a non-seasonal quarter for the first time, reflecting the growing consumer preference for premium smartphones.
The growing popularity of Apple's Pro line-up was evident in the first quarter of 2024, with these models accounting for half of Apple's total sales—a significant jump from just 24% during the same period in 2020, according to Counterpoint Research.
"The Pro iPhones have become key revenue drivers for Apple, contributing more than 60% of its sales value in the first quarter of this year," the report highlighted. "The Pro line-up offers substantial upgrades and notable enhancements over the base models, a strategy that has proven successful as consumers are willing to pay for premium features."
Samsung also saw strong performance from its S24 series, which can be attributed to the early release of the lineup and its focus on generative AI technology. "The S24 series was the first to hit the market with GenAI features, enabling users to create unique content and experience a new level of interaction with their smartphones," the report noted.
