How to Safely Clean Your Computer Screen at Home

Computer screens vary, so the cleaning methods will depend on the type of screen and its level of dirtiness. This guide offers steps to effectively clean and disinfect your monitor,

plus tips for cleaning your keyboard. The first step is to consult your device's user manual to determine whether it has an LCD, LED,

or another type of display, as most manuals provide screen care recommendations.

For LED and LCD screens, avoid using any products that could damage the reflective coating. This layer is particularly sensitive to harsh chemicals like acetone,

ammonia, and propylene glycol, which are often found in common cleaners like window sprays. These substances can corrode the surface, leading to scratches and smudges that are hard to remove.

Avoid using the following on your monitor:

Avoid using the following items on your computer screen:

- Window cleaner

- Kitchen cleaners

- Paper towels

- Makeup remover

- Dish soap or hand soap

Use the following for safe screen cleaning:

- Microfiber cloths

- Distilled water (if needed)

- Diluted white vinegar or rubbing alcohol (only for non-LCD screens, if needed)

**Cleaning a Mac Screen:**

If you own an Apple Pro Display XDR or an iMac, your screen may be made of nano-texture or standard glass, requiring specific care:

- Use ethyl or isopropyl alcohol wipes for the display and other hard, nonporous surfaces.

- Avoid using bleach or hydrogen peroxide.

- Use the polishing cloth that came with your device to remove dust and smudges. If necessary, dampen it slightly with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) solution.

**How to Clean a Computer Screen Without Damage:**

For best results, clean your screen without using liquids. A dust-free cloth, like a microfiber wipe, is ideal. If a cloth alone doesn’t work,

distilled water is one of the safest options for most screens, as it contains no added chemicals. You can also create a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. If you don’t have vinegar and the screen is non-LCD,

mix distilled water with rubbing alcohol in equal parts and transfer the mixture to a spray bottle.
